When warmer weather arrives, decks are where the magic happens.
A well-designed deck can easily become the heart of your outdoor living, offering a seamless extension of your home. With additional square footage for cooking, entertaining, playing, or relaxing, the space can often become the favorite of homeowners in the spring and summer seasons, but it can easily become a thorn in your side if you need more time to upkeep the space instead of using it.
If you’ve been exploring the idea of adding a new deck or replacing your existing one, you’re in the right place.
The Challenge of Classic Decks
Did you know that decks can offer up to 40% ROI on your home? If they’re built to last, that is.
With nearly 40 years of experience transforming the homes of our neighbors in Eastern Iowa, we’ve helped our neighbors love the look of their home and improve the function of spaces, both while making sure they’re made to last. That’s what sets us apart.
While other decking may hit the mark upon installation, over time, they often become more work and money than they’re worth, leaving you without reaping many benefits. For classic wood or composite decks, homeowners can find themselves spending more time completing a laundry list of maintenance tasks than time spent enjoying their space. Regular maintenance demands include constant checks to avoid or fix:
- Rot and decay
- Insect infestation
- Water damage
- Warping due to changes in temperature
- Discoloration due to sunlight
- Splintering, cracking, and loose nails
As a result of those common issues, the repair costs, combined with precautions and ongoing maintenance like staining and sealing, add up. Over a 10-year span, homeowners can incur costs of up to $10,000 for those repairs, and even once they’re fixed, the maintenance has to continue.
Benefits of Maintenance-Free Decks
Engineered to last a lifetime, Hometown Restyling partners with TruNorth Decking to offer top-of-the-line PVC maintenance-free decking that withstands the test of time, without spending hours on upkeep each month. Unlike other materials, maintenance-free decks are:
- Durable, built to last;
- Mold, scratch, and dent-resistant;
- Won’t absorb moisture from weather or spills;
- Fade-resistant, so their surface maintains its original color!
All you have to do to keep your deck looking brand new? Spray it down with a hose to remove debris, and enjoy!
That means you can say goodbye to finding creaky, loose boards with nails popping out, major cracks, or water damage as you’re trying to enjoy your time outside. Not to mention, with a limited lifetime product warranty AND Hometown Restyling’s lifetime workmanship warranty, your deck is protected.
We utilize CAMO deck fastening tools, which enable us to securely screw in deck boards, without leaving any trace of screw heads on the top of the boards—a lifesaver for toes and heels! The tool helps us screw the nails in on an angle to keep them hidden. This method takes a bit longer, but the result is well worth it.
As homeowners, we know curb appeal matters just as much as function. Our team will walk you through TruNorth Decking’s options in their Premium Hardwood and Earthtone Collections that feature different wood grains and colors to find your perfect match. But the customizations don’t stop there, with both classic and modern options for railings, and designs integrated in the baseboards of your deck, the possibilities are endless.
Project Highlights

Accessible Deck Project in Monticello
This client was looking for a safe and accessible new deck that would meet their specific mobility needs, including wheelchair access. Their goal was a new design that would improve flow and functionality, without compromising on appearance.
By utilizing Vinyl Decking, paired with aluminum railings, Hometown Restyling created a modern, clean look. Aluminum balusters added contrast and visual interest while maintaining open sightlines.
With accessibility at the forefront of this project, its unique size was a standout feature, requiring ADA accessibility standards while fitting within a tight footprint. The length associated with accessibility standards, combined with existing landscaping, necessitated precise planning to meet the client’s needs while maintaining aesthetic appeal.
Hometown Restyling’s project manager even made the recommendation to add stairs that lead to the backyard, a feature this homeowner hadn’t had before. As a result, they’ve said they’re going out into their backyard now more than ever, and it’s one of their favorite parts of this project!
Spacious Entertainment Deck in Cedar Rapids
This customer approached Hometown Restyling to build a deck on their new construction home, to create an extension of their home, perfect for entertaining.
After running out of space on their deck in a previous home, they were looking to maximize their outdoor space in their new home to have room for entertaining friends and family. They wanted enough space to fit a grill, a large patio table, and seating for up to 12 people at a time. For that reason, they went with a unique size of 14×24’ for their deck.
Without needing a tear-down of an existing deck, Hometown Restyling was able to dive right in, starting by pouring new footings and framing the space. For materials, we utilized TruNorth’s Ultra Collection, a part of their Clubhouse Decking line, in the shade Driftwood. To complement the board colors and add to the new modern look, we used black Westbury decorative metal railing to complete the deck.
