At Hometown Restyling, we install manual and motorized retractable screens for patios, covered porches, pergolas, enclosed patios, and garages throughout Eastern Iowa. When the shade screen is up, you have full open-air access. When it’s down, you have shade, privacy, and a bug-free space.
Iowa summers are made for being outside, until the heat and bugs chase you back in. Whether it’s the afternoon sun baking your patio, the mosquitoes taking over your deck after 6 PM, or a garage that’s too hot to do anything in, the right pull-down shade screen changes everything.
We’ve been serving Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the surrounding Eastern Iowa communities since 1986. Our team will guide you through your options, help you choose the right screen and color for your home, and handle installation from start to finish.
If you’d love to turn your garage into a summer hangout, or get more out of an enclosed patio without permanently walling it in, a pull-down screen makes it possible.
Here’s what homeowners across Eastern Iowa are discovering:

A pull-down (or retractable) screen is an outdoor screen system that rolls down from a compact housing when you need protection from bugs, sun, or wind, and rolls back up out of sight when you don’t. They can be mounted on patios, porches, pergolas, garages, and enclosed patios. Essentially anywhere that has an overhead structure to attach to.
Insect screens use a fine-weave mesh to block mosquitoes, flies, and other bugs while maximizing airflow. They’re the right choice if bugs are your primary concern, and for most Eastern Iowa homeowners, they are.
Solar shade screens are denser and designed to block UV rays and reduce heat and glare. They’re available in options that block 80%, 90%, or 95% of UV. They still allow you to see through the mesh but significantly reduce sun intensity.
During the day, yes, solar shade screens block the view from outside while still allowing you to see out, making them a great option for patios or garages close to neighbors or a street. The denser the screen (higher UV block percentage), the more privacy it provides.
At night, if your space is lit from the inside, people outside may be able to see in more easily. If nighttime privacy is a priority, a denser solar shade fabric or an opaque screen option is worth discussing during your consultation.
Insect screens, by contrast, offer minimal privacy in either direction, they’re designed for airflow and bug protection.
Yes, we install both. Manual systems use a spring-assisted pull bar and are simple, reliable, and easy to operate. Motorized systems are remote-controlled with an automatic obstruction stop and an optional smartphone app.
Absolutely, this is one of the most popular applications we do. A retractable garage screen transforms your garage into a comfortable, bug-free hangout space in the summer. With the screen down and the garage door up, you get airflow and shade without the mosquitoes. We install screens for single-car and double-car garage openings.
A solar shade screen blocks a meaningful amount of direct sun and radiant heat, making shaded spaces noticeably more comfortable on hot summer days, especially in a garage or west-facing patio that gets hit hard by afternoon sun. The exact temperature difference will vary depending on your specific space and screen type.
In most cases, yes. A Hometown Restyling specialist can evaluate your setup and let you know what’s possible. If you’re also considering adding a pergola or patio cover, we can plan both together.
We offer a wide range of frame colors and screen options. Insect mesh comes in black or white. Solar shade fabrics are available in colors including black, charcoal, granite, bone, sandstone, white, espresso texture, and more. We’ll walk you through the options during your consultation so you can choose what best matches your home’s exterior.
Manual screens use a spring-assisted pull bar. You pull the screen down and lock it in place, then release it to retract.
Motorized screens operate with a remote control and optional smartphone app. They’re convenient for larger openings and frequently used screens. Motorized systems also include an automatic obstruction stop for safety.
We partner with Stoett Industries, a leading American manufacturer of retractable screens and enclosures. We install their screen systems built with high-grade aluminum frames and heavy-duty mesh that resists deterioration, punctures, tears, and mildew. Screens are made in the USA.
The screen systems we install use high-grade aluminum frames that resist corrosion and heavy-duty mesh that resists deterioration, punctures, tears, and mildew. The side retention system provides a wind safety rating of up to 30 mph. For severe weather, we recommend retracting screens.
