An Inside Look at a Tub to Shower Conversion

When asked what they would change about their current home, most (if not all) homeowners would name a project they’ve been thinking about since they moved in. Unless you custom build your home, you probably have some home features you either have to learn to live with or update as soon as you’re able.

At Home Town Restyling, we love helping customers update that room in their home that makes them go “meh” and transforming it into one of their favorite spots in their home. That’s exactly what we did for this bathroom remodel we’re highlighting in our real project spotlight.

Real Project Spotlight: Tub to Shower Remodel

We started this project when the customer reached out expressing interest in a bathroom remodel. Like most homes built in the 1980s, the basement bathroom featured a very large whirlpool tub. This was not an ideal situation for the family. The tub not only took up a lot of room, but it was also a pain to clean.

Plus, it wasn’t great for everyday use and when the family wanted to use their basement to host guests that preferred to use a shower. The owners contacted us to help them tear out the tub and install a walk-in shower they could utilize and enjoy.

When thinking about converting from a tub to a shower, you might assume you have to commit to a long and messy renovation, but it might surprise you how easy it can be. Instead of completely tearing out the bathroom, we did a tub-to-shower conversion with products from our preferred partner, Bath Planet. This conversion process involved fabricating a made-to-measure shower that fit neatly where the bathtub once sat.

Outline of the Overall Process
When you decide to do a tub-to-shower conversion, you can expect a simplified and stress-free process. To start, someone from our team will come out to your home for an in-person consultation, and we will measure the area.

Next, we let you make your design choices and order the materials if Bath Planet doesn’t already have them in stock. For a tub-to-shower conversion, we may come out and install new plumbing lines, new drains, and a moisture resistant backer board ahead of time.

Finally , we come back and install the acrylic walls. This particular bathroom took two days to complete, but we are often able to complete everything in as little as one day!

The Benefits of a Bath Planet Conversion
A bathroom conversion is the perfect alternative for many of our customers. They are drawn to a conversion project for a variety of reasons:

  • It saves time—most installations are finished in just a few days.
  • The durable acrylic shower enclosures are designed to resist fading, cracking, and are resistant to mold and mildew.
  • They are designed to be as low-maintenance as possible, so scrubbing is a thing of the past.
  • All products are custom made for an air-tight fit and are triple-lock sealed to prevent water from seeping under your new shower.
  • They come with a limited lifetime manufacturer’s warranty.

These perks are ultimately what made the difference for the customer mentioned. Since their tub was very large (four feet wide and six feet long), custom acrylic walls and a shower pan were special-ordered. The great thing about Bath Planet products is that customers can customize the look of their bathroom with a variety of patterns and colors to suit their unique style. Each look in their Reveal Series collection includes patterns that are laser-engraved with realistic grout patterns—a newly patented process for the bath industry.

For this project, the customer chose the sophisticated look of a natural granite/quartz.

Additional Accessories and Upgrades
Since our customer was already enhancing the look of their space with the granite shower walls, they opted to make some other contemporary additions to the space as well. They chose a barn roller sliding door, which helped make the overall space feel more spacious and bright. They also added a combination rain shower head to make every shower feel like an escape to a luxurious oasis.

To finish it off, we added some final touches to make the shower more accessible and safe for everyone. We added a bench seat within the shower and some grab bars so those with knee or hip problems can have peace of mind in the shower. We also added a textured floor base to decrease the risk of any slips or falls.

We are extremely proud of how this walk-in shower turned out—and more importantly, our customer was satisfied with how their vision for their bathroom came together. Not only were we able to quickly turn this project around, but the customer slashed their remodeling bill in half compared to what they would have paid with a complete bathroom renovation using natural materials.

Considering Your Own Bathroom Remodel?

Now that you know how easy a bathroom upgrade can be, you might wonder if now is the right time to consider one for yourself. There are three major indications you shouldn’t put off a bathroom remodel any longer.

Signs It’s Time to Remodel Your Bathroom:

It has a mold problem.

There is nothing worse than when you’re constantly cleaning and scrubbing and fungi keep coming back. This is a sign of a bigger problem underneath your bathroom tiles. Our expert bathroom remodeling team can get to the root of the problem and fix it for good.

It’s too difficult to use.

If you or a loved one have mobility issues and your current bathroom setup is becoming a safety hazard, it’s best to discuss alternatives that will help make daily showers as accessible as possible.

Also, if your space just isn’t getting used, it’s worth the investment to revamp the space so it’s more practical.

The look is outdated.

When your bathroom doesn’t fit your personal taste, it makes the time you spend in there unenjoyable. Updating your bathroom to align with current trends will also make it easier to attract homebuyers when it’s time to sell your property.

Other Bathroom Remodeling Options
After several years of use, bathroom fixtures tend to wear down and are no longer useful to you or your family. We offer a variety of remodeling options that can accommodate your current and future needs. In addition to walk-in showers, we also have tub/shower combos that allow you to have the best of both worlds and barrier-free showers that make walking into your shower effortless. No matter which option you choose, each has stylish patterns and colors so you can achieve a look you will love for years to come.

Need Help Making Your Bathroom Remodel More Affordable?
